Java is still right up there . Universities are teaching java the most out of all languages. If it was outdated why would they teach java the most?
It just depends on what part of the industry you are in and what your aim is.
In the real world today, java isn't used as much as others. Maybe they are trying to bring it back, but for now, it really isn't the top of the food chain in programming languages, there's even others that are heading in a more upward direction in comparison to java. What I learned in school, I don't really use anymore. They don't teach you MOST of the skills and talents you'll use in life, it's just there to separate people into different career categories. Not everyone can be an engineer.
