I am going to learn XHTML and CSS but I need a graphical design program that is easy to create banner, backgrounds and logos with. Could you suggest me something?

Thanks,

Photoshop is way to much IMO. I don't need all that photo options. I just want something to make webgraphics tbh. I understand Photoshop can do that too but still it is too much for me :p.

Gimp is way to go...
Or you can also try the test version of Fireworks.

You should get GIMP if you want to go free and legal. Photoshop is the industry standard for a reason though.

You can give Gimp a try, but once you use Photoshop CS series you will say WoW.

I would decide you use GIMP, It's quite easier to use. Plus it's easier to add backgrounds and new patterns you install.
