Debating about religion is common, but that has nothing to do with using religion to prove a point. People may use it in debates, but thats just for an added effect for those who have a religion. Just like in government speeches (George Bush's favorite method) mentioning God, and the whole "In God we Trust." That's patriotic to make people have higher beliefs but that isn't used to prove a point or make them join your side.
Religion is debatable because they are all made up by someone. They had to have come from somewhere didn't they? Some people need a faith to make sense of life. There's diversity in religions which creates conflicts, and thus the debates come into play. The more religious people tend to base their life upon their faith, and debate with anyone as to why they should be that religion or debate things with the idea of their religion because it's habit. It doesn't prove things though.
