There is this solution, with instructions on how to get Ubuntu on a flash USB. Note that this should work with the current Karmic (9.10) release the same way:

The cool thing here is that it's not just the Live CD you are booting, but also you can make your own customisations to it and they will be there for you when using the USB to boot a system.
