Need an OS - Idiot #1 - 10-04-2009

I need an OS that will run off a flash drive.

RE: Need an OS - RPicard - 10-04-2009

I used to run something called "Tiny XP Beast Edition" on a virtual box. There's also Damn Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/) but the site is down right now apparently. It is designed to run on flash drives though.

I wouldn't saw this is Windows specific because it's not possible to run windows off a flash drive. Anyway, go ahead and try out SLAX (http://www.slax.org). If you're into pen testing and server security, try out BackTrack3 (www.remote-exploit.org/backtrack_download.html). both are based on Slackware linux but are easy to use. The cool thing about SLAX is that at the download page, you can get rid of what packages you don't want so you have exactly what you want. Hope this helped!

EDIT: Also, with SLAX, just click on add more modules in the "build SLAX" page. That way you can add exactly what you want and you have your own customized little SLAX system Big Grin!

You do of course have to make your flash drive bootable...

Seems like that could be helpful for you.

You can install Vista and windows 7 from a flash drive, have a read of this blog to get a good idea of what is needed:

I still wouldn't recommend it. Vista and 7 are pretty big. They also have some big requirements so if he goes and boots it on older computers, it's gonna run bad. At least SLAX or BT will run fast on stuff from even the 90's.

Well, if it could work, you could always consider running Windows XP Pro with SP3.

It may not be new, but it is dependable and very customisable and it works very well!

Also, on a new installation, it takes up about 2 GB, give or take,
but when you can get USB sticks of 8 GB maybe to 16 GB, then maybe that
wouldn't need to be such a problem.

Many Linux editions will run of a memory stick, give them a go as they are legal and will do most of what you will need.
