Vista Laptop not able to connect to local network pcs using hostnames.

All systems are in workgroup enviroment.
This Vista computer can browse internet and ping internet sites, but not able to browse and ping local network computers only.

Able to browse computers when mapped with there ip address.

Below Primary checks done.

First of all. I would always assume you can ping a site if you can view it.
Sort of goes with out saying.
You say you cant ping your local network?
Yet you can browse them via there ip address?
I am assuming you are talking about there internal address?
If so then its just a network setting either on one of the systems or your router.
The fact you can browse using the IP address suggests you can access just fine.

And whats the big deal if you need to make a network connection like this?
\\192.168.0.2\share or whatever?
Once the mapping is done you can just shortcut it so no problem.

Re-configure DNS to use DNS suffix order. To do that, go to the properties of the connection. Select the properties of IPv4. Select Advanced>DNS. Check "Append these DNS suffix in order. Then add your local and remote DNS information.
