if there is a problem at your end pinging it won't help, thats the point of that website because it is third party

Except for this. On forums sometimes you can't access it because you're I.P. banned. Pinging the website will show it as being down. If you use that website it has a different I.P. address and will show it as working.

The ping command works fine if you just want to know if the site is down.
If you want to see if your banned, then a website is your best bet.
