Writing an essay really quick
I need to check if my sentence is grammatically correct.

Their differing interactions with society cause the reader to either encounter sympathy, or the lack of.

Well first of all it's spelled grammar.

I don't think you need a comma but I would recommend this:
"Their differing interactions with society cause the reader to either encounter sympathy or lack thereof."

Alright, I've never used thereof, but thank you. I may remake the sentence and weave that in there.

"or the lack of", as in lacking sympathy,

so the interactions with society cause the read to either feel sympathy or not feel sympathy

Differing interactions with society either provoke sympathy or the lack thereof.
(One does not encounter sympathy; they must feel this emotion, so provoke works).

If you must say "the reader" in the sentence, write "from the reader" after thereof.

Thereof is correct.
