The reason Linux mint try's to connect to ubuntu's servers is because linux mint is a offshoot of ubuntu. It just uses some reconfigured settings to make it more user friendly.
As for it being too user friendly or retarded, I am an average linux user since I don't use it a whole lot however linux isn't meant to be the scourge of operating systems meant only for super users. If this was the case then linux would never take off, enjoy the short cuts it gives. I have tried fedora and i always ask "wouldn't it be easier so and so way?"
