Proper setup of website

I have a few domans and going to start one up but I dont want to use my existing way of how I set it up. My existing .com I made a landing page witch then took you to portal then to forums, after that I use htaccess to bypass the landing page to go straight to portal. This just dont seem right to me or is it?
