Actually that's normal. You need to enter a code depending on whether you're playing black or white.
This is the code you need to enter for black ( I lost the one for white ).
Make sure to enter it under action reply and check raw.

So just load the ROM, enter and activate that code, and then reset the game cartridge. It should work and save perfectly.
Note, these codes are only for the no$gba emulator.
