Deadly asteroid headed for earth (poll)
#51
That's about 0.06 km if I'm not mistaken. How fast is this object going, though? They always include the size to make it seem dangerous, but something this size wouldn't be a world wide concern unless it managed to strike a speed that unleashed incredible amounts of force. (Example: The largest nuclear weapon ever dropped [Tsar Bomba] released 50 megatons, while the Chicxulub asteroid [the one that might have wiped out the dinosaurs] hit at around 90 teratons.) If this is truly comparable to the Tunguska event, it won't be a doomsday scenario if that's what some of you are thinking. It's disappointing to see people scared of something like this, it's like Comet Elenin, people were so worried, even after it had broken apart. But a majority of articles made about it were hyped up to make a rock that could pass by us harmlessly or leave a small dent on our massive planet, sound like it could be a threat to everyone.

But then again, I might just be an idiot.

This guy has no idea when a asteroid will hit earth.

I personally don't think it will. I think we have some lasers or bombs built all over the world to deal with that if it was true.

Not going to happen. If it was that dangerous the military would actually do something about it.

Another meteor going to be close in a couple of days.
Small enough to be fair not to be an issue.
But NASA has condition code set at 9 currently?
Whats with that?

I think it's similar to an asteroids hazard rating, I'm not all that sure, though.

I think its the uncertenty rating actually but may be wrong.
What i found interesting today was reading this site.
http://www.minorplanetcenter.org/iau/lis...erous.html
Here is a quote from that site.
"This list is updated daily and is also updated as and when new objects are discovered."
It appears new meteors are infact found often and ones that would be considered "Dangerous".
Yet earlier in this thread a wise man stated i was stupid to think NASA did not know 10 years in advance of EVERY dangerous meteor.
Who would ever have guessed?

I highly doubt that any meteor is going to hit in 2013, if it was everyone would already know and it would be on every news site.

Not saying it happened. Bit early to tell. Something happened but.

Quote:RENO, Nev. (AP) — Astronomers say a loud explosion heard across a large swath of Nevada and California on Sunday morning was likely caused by a meteor.

The explosion rattled windows and shook houses from Reno to Winnemucca in Nevada, and from the Sacramento to Bakersfield areas in California.
