Even if they release an update to fix this, would the computers be stable enough to update itself ? .. Especially with the continued restarts and loss of network connection.... !!

I don't think so!
The symptoms were BSOD on startup weren't they? The only fixes available required some alone time with a tech and the computer.
Corporate customers are more likely to change, and non-corporate are more likely to take it to a shop, where they will change it for them!
Sucks both ways. They will probably be forced to lower their prices to get any cash flow.
Apparently 10% of Coles (Supermarket in Australia) checkouts were knocked out of action.
