1) Firewall like zonealarm. (anything that notifies you of outbound) Most important!!
2) Antivirus like AVG. (works well enough)
3) Spyware like spybot.
4) Most important. Common sence.

Thats my 4 point plan to getting xp to run ok.

And dont cost a dime. Where some of the tools you recommend cost $.

Also, use a good secure web browser, such as Firefox, with some security enhancements, such as the ones shown here:

Also, it includes Sandboxie, which could be considered a 'must-have', as well as using VPN's or Proxy Servers when onlline.
