Remote Desktop Connection

I have been trying for ages to get remote desktop connection to work but I always end up giving up every time.

Is there a way to connect to my home computer running windows vista from an xp computer over the internet? (Not within a network.)

I read a microsoft article that said it was only possible with windows server 2008 but that doesn't seem practical. There must be a way...

I should think that there are ways to do this over the web.

It seems that Remote Access is disabled, by default in Windows Vista, but here is a link to some info that may help you out:

NOTE; - Remote desktop is only included in the Professional, Business, or Ultimate versions of Windows. Home editions do not have remote desktop.

I don't know what version you have, but if it's the Home version, then you may have to install a 3rd party application,
to be able to access your PC remotely.

There are probably other applications as well, that you could use to connect remotely, possibly Teamviewer,
for example, which I have heard of, but never used, so I don't know if that particular application would work in this case.

But if you Google around a little, you will see others looking for the same type of thing and you may find the answer.

Just bear in mind the security aspects when downloading software from sites that you don't know
and upload files to online anti-virus scanners [usually between 5 MB - 20 MB limit], to sites such as:

www.virustotal.com
www.jotti.org
http://scanner.novirusthanks.org/

Check out www.DynDNS.com because i am sure that you have a dynamic Ip at home and it will be changing. It is very simple to set up. Remote desktop may require you to open some ports on your router ( if you use one) .. if you have any ?'s Pm me and I will be glad to help you set up remote desktop..

Wow, thank you, I really appreciate it. My remote desktop is activated and I am using Vista Ultimate.

I have heard of Teamviewer before and for a time I had it sitting on my computer waiting to be tested out. I never got around to it and its gone since then.
I would assume that if I use team viewer, the pc that connects to mine would have to be running teamviewer as well wouldn't it?
I have googled into it for a while but I got frustrated so I asked the knowledgable community of SF.
I suppose I can search for a program that may be able to connect via web. But I appreciate it just the same.

As for the dynamic IP, my IP doesn't change often and even when it does its not too much trouble to just start using a new one. My main goal is to be able to connect to my PC remotely without installing and software on the foreign computer. Preferrably through the remote desktop service built into windows.

No problem, hope it may have helped a little!

Yes, the other PC connecting to you, would have to be running Teamviewer as well, unless you were both using something else,
but maybe another type of remote connection applicaton, may be compatible with Teamviewer, I'm not certain.

One thing about Teamviewer though, is that you should absolutely trust whoever you allow to access your PC remotely,
as there are many who would take advantage of that and exploit you if they could.

So you just have to take care, as far as that is concerned!

I'm sure that there must be some software avalable, to allow you to do what you want to do,
and it would mean that you would have to configure your PC, to accept incoming connections from wherever you wanted to access it from.
I know that you usually do this in real-time with Teamviewer etc, but am not certain how it would work, if you are trying to access your PC remotely,
maybe with a set of pre-configured question and answer type security prompts, that you set up. It's maybe best that you Google a little about that.
