Well, I actually kinda like the red and green combo. They're complimentary colors, so I think they're a good choice (really makes the character pop).
The only thing I would change, if I were to be really nitpicky, is I would take the whole image and move it down (so it cuts off some of the bottom, and makes a little more space above his head), and then make the black border a pixel or two thicker.
Also, I think the border would look cool if you set it to about 40% opacity.
