Go here and get a FREE copy of Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 sent to your letterbox:

https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

When your disc arrives, insert it and choose the install inside Windows option [you don't have to worry about partitions], couldn't be easier, perfect for you to test it out. You could also install Windows 7 on another partition and have 3 good operating systems on your box using just 2 partitions.

If you install Ubuntu inside Windows it will give you the option of Ubuntu or Windows when you boot up the computer, you can un-install it from control panel in add/remove programs if you decide it's not your style.

I agree, i'd use a copy of Ubuntu Linux, and Windows XP/Seven and you'll have the best of both worlds.. As wine does run windows programs under the Linux environment but it doesn't work very well. So, I'd advise you dual boot them both and then you'll see the difference in operating systems, and you won't lose your work either.

Do what i said, It's noobie proof, i swear.

All you have to do is insert the disc, it will give you some options, select the install Ubuntu inside windows option and follow what it says on the screen.
It pretty much does everything for you. It's like installing any other software that you download from the net.

Give it a try! You should be able to do this, it's very very easy and basic.

First get your free copy: https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
Takes around 3-4 weeks to arrive, give it a go, if you have any problems post back here and i will try assist you.

Ha, not a vote for Mac.

Every operating system has different advantages but overall for me i'd say Windows XP.

Wait a couple of weeks so you can get 9.10 instead of 9.04. It's way better.
