Mozilla Corp. on Tuesday released the first beta of Thunderbird 2.0, the open-source developer's next-generation e-mail client. It also pushed back the rollout of a Firefox security update by nearly a week.

Thunderbird 2.0 Beta 1 sports a revamped visual design, new message tags to organize mail, browser-like back and forward navigation, and improved support for extensions. It also boasts improvements in message filing, offline use, and saved searches.

The beta, which Mozilla stressed was "for testing purposes only," is available in versions for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It can be downloaded from the Mozilla Web site.

Also on Tuesday, Mozilla announced it has postponed the release of the next security update to its Firefox browser from this Wednesday to next Tuesday, Dec. 19. Firefox 1.5.0.9 and 2.0.0.1 -- the latter the first patch issued since Firefox 2.0 went final in October -- will patch an unspecified number of vulnerabilities and quash other non-security bugs.

Users who have Firefox 1.5 and later set to retrieve and install updates will have the new versions pushed to them automatically starting Tuesday.
