Proxys are good, for one to stay anonymous,
but they are also used for the bad guys,
and that's how they never get caught...

But a proxy is a way to route your internet through another IP.

Ok. Let's say we want to stay anonymous without the hassel
of using a web-based proxy.
(ex. anonymouse.org, proxyfoxy.com & proxify.com)

Firefox is made easy, so all you have to do, is get
the IP address, and the port number, and you're set.

First, let's go to a list of proxys....

Find a proxy on the page (it can be any, because there are thousands)
and copy the IP address.
Here's an example of what you should see:
Code:
[color=red]130.194.64.162[/color]:[color=blue]3124[/color]    PlanetLab proxy   Australia (Monash)

Alright. Now we have the IP and the port number.
(I color coded, so it would help)

Now, (in Firefox) click, Tools » Options... » General (Tab) » Connection Settings » (And select) Manual Proxy Configuration...

Now, using the IP above, you need to place the IP in the box, where it says, "HTTP Proxy". Then place the port number, in the box to the right, where it says "Port".

Now press OK.

Now your IP should be changed. (note, this may not work with some IPs, as some are old and outdated and are no longer active. just go and pick another one Smile)

don't get turned in to your ISP!

Incase you didn't read the top of the page, it says:
Quote:For what purpose we run our proxy listings? There are some main purposes:
1. To help system administrators to find and close public access to proxy servers opened by mistake. There is a probability that some proxies in these listings were mistakenly left open by a system administrator or inexperienced home user. So system administrators can look through these listings to check if their internet server IPs are listed here or not.
2. To help people stay anonymous in the internet. However before using public opened server you must to be sure that it is legal. You must remember that if you are using mistakenly opened server its administrator will find his mistake, sooner or later. In this case server admin can pass your ISP all your IP inquiries if internet server traffic will be large. Do you like such "anonymity"? And of course DO NOT use servers from SamAir listings for illegal or malicious deeds!

What that is basicly saying, is don't use the proxys FULL time and to do illegal activity with. Just use it for staying anonymous when registering and posting on forums, but don't keep it on full time and use up that person's bandwith....

Here's a screenshot of the proxy configuration...

Surely an IP anonymiser program does the same thing though? But they're more commonly used for, illegal purposes.
I will probably get in trouble. But proxy makes your computer slow and im on dial-up.So its slow already
