This guide will show how to secure your current email address,
by creating a Gmail account for sending and receiving email.

Private Gmail Setup
  • Visit Fake Name Generator to generate details based on
    gender, name set and country.

  • Signup with Gmail, using the generated fake details. This
keeps your identity private. Choose a secret question and
secret answer which will be incomprehensible to anyone
    else. Keep this information safe.

  • Go to Settings in your Gmail account. Click on Accounts.
Opt to send email using Gmail servers. Send a verification
email to your current address to activate the service with
    a confirmation link.

  • Go to Settings for your current email address. There should
be an option to forward email. Specify your Gmail account
    as the forwarding address.

  • Go to Settings in your Gmail account. Click on Accounts.
Opt to import your email from your current email address.
Import or backup your contact list.
You can now send and receive email at your new Gmail account,
yet still use a current email address. It keeps your Gmail private.

More Security Habits
  • Do not use your Gmail to register or signup anywhere.
Do not use as secondary account for password resets.
This reduces the chances of account compromise and
subsequent compromise of backup email and contacts.

  • To prevent email harvesting, stop publishing a current
email address. Your alternatives are to use:
    - reCAPTCHA to hide your email address.
    - PrivacyBox to create a contact page.
    - Mailinator to create a public inbox.

  • To prevent keylogging, be sensible. Use virtualization
or encrypt keystrokes when downloading programs.
If your current email address is compromised, contact the
provider promptly. Meanwhile, you can rely on your Gmail
backup to either setup a temporary or new email account.

Nice tutorial Eve. Omniscient has something similar posted I believe. Has this been submitted to Skills tutorial compilation?

Good job.

-Sam
Been known this but good information.
I would not suggest Gmail Eve, there have been many reports of easily intercepted e-mails straight from google. Other than this, great guide.

Thanks, Sam. I will consider submitting this or another.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did not realise this. Perhaps I shall recommend GMX.com instead.
