There are GNOME and KDE versions.

Look at this chart.

I would choose Linux Mint over Ubuntu because it has more features. Both are very similair otherwise though.

I'm now using Mint It seems good so far!

Be sure to try compiz aswell. You can use all kinds of visual effects. My favourites are the fire and the cube.

I'm running ubuntu and it's great. Not tried Mint though.

I love the wobbly windows for compiz
