I've renamed htaccess.txt to .htaccess but I'm getting a 404 when I try to go to threads / forums with SE Friendly URL's enabled. I have the .htaccess file in my forum's root, not my server's. Is that where it needs to be?

That's where it needs to be, make sure your host supports mod_rewrite. If it doesn't, it'll never work.

I've never had a problem with mod_rewrite before. I'm using Godaddy shared hosting.

I fixed this problem by using the Google SEO plugin AND the htaccess example that comes with it.
