Well it doesn't really matter which one you learn first, I've started with PHP and then JS.....
Anyway you should do a jump and look over Ajax scripting, or atleast keep it in your head.
You don't need to know javascript before php. Of course knowing javascript can assist you with ajax stuff but some great libraries already exist. You just have to be functional enough to integrate them.
