I found this helpful guide at Recipester.org.

Problem:
You really like the large icon in Windows 7, but you think desktop icon spacing is too large, how to change desktop icon spacing without change the icon size? Follow these steps.

Solution:
  1. Right-click on the desktop, then select "Personalize" in the drop-down menu.
  2. Click on "Window Color"
  3. Click on "Desktop", there will be "Icon Spacing" you can change.
  4. I highly recommend you to change them as "32".
  5. Click OK to save and quit.

Enjoy
LOL.

Nice share

but was a tut really needed.

Nice guide. My desktop is really cluttered up right now, and I like having it neat with the least as much icons as possible.
I've always wondered on how to do this, but I've never researched how to do it.
