I tried this out, I called my carrier and they had no idea wtf I was talking about when I asked them for an MEP code. They had me talk to blackberry and then BB told me that instead of asking for an mep code I should ask for an unlock code. Eventually I got it to work. I called verizon and told them I wanted an unlock code and they led me through the instructions from the OP and my phone was unlocked. I told them that I was going to move to europe and I wanted my phone to work there and they said they would do it for me.

unlocking a phone can be done by many ways but the best method and the safe way to unlock a phone is through codes. even in codes too there are many providers who offer you free services. but free codes are risky. they may go wrong while generating codes and when the number of attempts exceeds it may lead to hard reset your phone which is a double work for you. so its better to get codes from paid services to unlock your phone. i got my phone unlocked through one such paid services. here is it.
