You can host anything you normally can on an actual server: websites, programs, services, etc.

I can connect to it, I don't know how to do anything on it though

Than why get a VPS?

i got it for free and now i cant even connect to it :L

Not true at all. Depends on what the actual server has installed and what ultimately the server house allows you to do.
But most things i agree. If he has shell access that is.
