So basically there isn't much we can do if the attack is large.

Nope you cant stop the fire unless you have a lot water. If the server can handle all those connections at once then you got a chance. You can stop DoS but you cant stop DDoS.

qI just use cloudflare and forget about it. their free service is amazing for what they offer.
