As a beginner, helmet's optional, since the most you'll be doing is cruising and learning novice tricks like ollies, and if you fall, you'll fall on your arms, or your back.

Once you start learning more difficult tricks, then you might want to consider a helmet.
I recommend knee/elbow pads for right now.

Yeah being a little overweight won't matter. Just look up some tutorials on youtube to get you started. For the gear, go to industrial or zumeiz.

im ordering a custom board offline with a little bit help with picking out the parts from a couple skater friends. ill order it monday it should be here next thursday then i have a concert friday at a indoor skate park so ill be skating while im listening at the same time.
