Speed up your work by using keyboard shortcuts in Ubuntu.

General

Alt + F1 Launch applications menu

Alt + F2 Launch “Run Application” dialogue

Alt + F3 Open the Deskbar Applet

Window shortcuts

Alt + F7 Move current window

Alt + F8 Resize current window

Alt + F9 Minimize current window

Alt + F10 Maximize/unmaximize current window

Alt + F5 Return window to ‘normal’ or previous size.

Alt + Space Open the window menu

Alt + F4 Close window

Alt + Tab Switch between open programs


Desktop shortcuts

Ctrl + Alt + Plus Switch to next screen resolution

Ctrl + Alt + Minus Switch to previous screen resolution

Ctrl + Alt + Left(Right) Move to the next virtual desktop

Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Left(Right) Take current window to the next virtual desktop

Ctrl + Alt + F1 Switch to the first virtual terminal

Ctrl + Alt + F2(F3)(F4)(F5)(F6) Select the different virtual terminals

Ctrl + Alt + F7 Restore back to the current terminal session with X
Nautilus / Thunar shortcuts

Shift + Ctrl + N Create new folder

F9 Toggle side-pane

Alt + Home Jump to home folder

Alt + Left Back

Alt + Right Forward

Alt + Enter Show file/folder properties

Ctrl + L Go to location bar

Ctrl + 1 Toggle view as icons

Ctrl + 2 Toggle view as list

Ctrl + S Select pattern

Ctrl + H Show hidden files

Ctrl + Plus Zoom In

Ctrl + Minus Zoom Out

Ctrl + 0 Normal Size


Shortcuts for Terminal

Ctrl + A Move cursor to the beginning of line

Ctrl + E Move cursor to the end of line

Ctrl + C Kill current process

Ctrl + Z Send current process to the background

Ctrl + D Log out

Ctrl + R Find the last command matching entered letters

Enter a letter, followed by Tab + Tab List with available commands beginning with those letters

Ctrl + U Delete current line

Ctrl + K Delete the command from the cursor right

Ctrl + W Delete word before the cursor

Ctrl + L Clears terminal output

Alt + F Move forward one word

Alt + B Move backward one word

Up/Down Browse command history

Shift + PageUp / PageDown Scroll terminal output
Create own keyboard shortcuts

For those who want to configure your own keyboard shortcuts, you can do it at System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts.

You can also add custom shortcuts, System > Preferences > Keyboard shortcuts.
