Quote:Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2010 Express requires that you register
your evaluation copy within 30 days of installation. Once you've
entered your Registration Key, the product is free. If you are not
sure how to obtain your free Visual Studio 2010 Express

2010 is a free 30day trial i believe, i honestly wouldn't waste the money buying it. if i wanted to code C# or VB.net i would use Visual Studio 2005 or if i want to do C/C++ on windows I'm happy with vb6.

You download it as a free trial. But you can register it by getting the activation key (which is free).

The confusion here is this:
Visual Studio 2010 DOES cost money.

Visual VB.NET Express, Visual C++ Express, and Visual C# Express are all free.

According to Wikipedia:
  • No IDE support for databases other than SQL Server Express and Microsoft Access
  • No support for Web Applications with ASP.NET (this can instead be done with Visual Web Developer Express, though the non-Express version of Visual Studio allows both web and windows applications from the same IDE)
  • No support for developing for mobile devices (no templates or emulator)
  • No Crystal Reports
  • Fewer project templates (e.g. Windows services template, Excel Workbook template)
  • Limited options for debugging and breakpoints
  • No support for creating Windows Services (Can be gained through download of a project template)
  • No support for OpenMP
  • Limited deployment options for finished programs

I can tell you right now that none of those features should affect a hobbyist.
Ho, ho, ho! Well, if it isn't fat stinking billy goat Billy Boy in poison!
How art thou, thou globby bottle of cheap, stinking chip oil?
Come and get one in the yarbles, if ya have any yarbles, you eunuch jelly thou!
