The leader doesn't necessarily have to be the best at coding, because you also need good leadership skills, to cover the responsibility of being in control of a number of members. If you think about it, that makes the most sense, and as long as the leader is interested in coding and willing to be committed, no it does not matter if they are the best or not. A person who knows their code can screw up the group a lot faster than one who knows how to handle the responsibility of being the leader. Theres a fine line, and thats where it should be at. NOT the best coder.
