I'm not sure what you mean by towed, do you mean behind a car? If so, yes it should be in neutral just to ensure your foot doesn't slip off the clutch and wreck your shi.t. lol

I mean when you drive a sling and have it picked up from the back you actually tow it in drive because if you don't you can actually get the transmission and drive train so hot it locks up. When you are going 40-50 mph that isn't fun.

u should be towing with the drive wheels in the air in the first place so nothing gets hot

Naturally, it sucks when you have a four wheel drive vehicle.

Well thats a first. Towing gets the drive line hot hey? Luckily the diff has oil in it. Sure the box will get a little warm but nothing to worry about. Thankfully there is some oil in the as well.
Most cars in Australia are rear wheel drive. Now imagine trying to tow a car with its rear in the air lol. Even with the steering locked it would be madness.
I have towed a car for a few hundred kms once. No lockups at all.

yeah, i have no clue what he was talking about lol. I have never ever heard of a tranny locking up because it was in neutral. I have towed 4WD trucks in 4WD and the only thing that really even begins to warm up is the transfer care. But it stays WELL below operating temperatures. And how int he crap would the drive line get hot and cause damage? Do you know what a drive line does? lol

fwd - front wheels in the air
rwd - back wheels in the air
4wd - get a flat bed , if you have to travel any kind of distance

It really doesn't matter. Get a damn tow rope and hook two cars together. Have the rear car be the front car's breaks. Simple.
It is 100% safe to tow with drive wheels on the ground, the temperatures won't even come close to operating levels.
