Domains prices - Brainless Control - 12-02-2009

How come .biz .bz .us .tv .cc ... cost more than .com .net .org? which are the most famous ones.

Every registry creates their own pricing based on approval from ICANN which gives them exclusive contract rights.

The CCtld's a different though as they are owned by their respective country and it's that government which sets a contract for the price and the rights to a registry.

Com Net and Org are run by Verisign (Network Solutions).

info is one of the cheapest btw as they have been offering first time first year domains for about $1.99. You used to be able to get them for free even.

I personally don't think you should ever register a domain with your host. If you decide to transfer away there is always the risk of them cancelling the registration or not allowing it to be transferred away from their name servers. On top of that, they usually run more than what they cost at a domain registrar. My philosophy on it is simple. Register at a domain registrar, host at a web host.

You're wrong there, Verisign sold off their domain selling business (NetSol) in '03, but NetSol continue to be an ICANN accredited registrar. However, you are right in saying that the .com, .net and .org TLDs are run by the Verisign registry.
