No, android is just as safe but people like to pirate apps thus lowering their defense. You shouldn't install any APK from the web unless its backed by something or has a rep with the community. Yet knowing people they will turn off their last defense on their phone for that so called "free game".

If you want to go by looks and brand, then Apple is fit for you. But if you're on a tight budget, then opting out for an Android phone will be better. Both have almost the same features. Security wise, Android is more vulnerable than Apple, but not downloading an APK file is somewhat even a child can understand. Hence, both are safe until you get very much silly with Android.
