Is there a tutorial floating around for this anywhere?
Gah, whoops, can a mod move this to the forum software section please ^^
Yes there is, written by Omniscient himself, currently residing at MyBBCentral.com

You can also look at the code of existing plugins to get an idea but don't redistribute them unless their license allows you to do so. I believe there are several which are 100% open source so you can release your modified version of those - just check the license in the plugin files as it should tell you the conditions.
The one Sam posted is nice. However, make sure you already know a little more than the basics PHP. It will make the plugin-writing experience all the more easier and fun.

Thanks Sam, I've recently become interested in using myBB, I'll give this a read for sure.
Be sure to check out the premium ones, to support Omniscient.
Yup, as Sam said.
Also, you could check http://community.mybb.com for tutorials.
There are a few, the best one is written by omni, which you must subscribe to mybbcentral for.
